Minister Shatter opens Cathal Brugha Vistor Centre

Justice Minister Alan Shatter today opened a historic visitor centre in Cathal Brugha Barracks, Dublin.

The visitor centre, which is the guard room where three journalists - Francis Sheehy Skeffington, Patrick McIntyre and Thomas Dickson, were executed on the 26th of April 1916, has been refurbished by Defence Forces engineers to mark the 95th anniversary of the event. It includes the cells where the prisoners were held and the exercise yard where they were executed.

Historic artefacts of the period will also be on display, including original letters of Francis Sheehy Skeffington, the pistols of Michael Collins and his ‘Squad’ and the Tricolour which draped Michael Collins coffin. Artefacts associated with General Richard Mulcahy and Cathal Brugha will also be on show as well as other important pre and post-independence artefacts.
