Minister Flanagan provides update on travel advice for Irish citizens in Belgium

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charles Flanagan, TD, has today provided updated travel advice for Irish citizens in Belgium or intending to travel to Belgium. This follows new instructions from the Belgian Government, who have downgraded to level 3 security status across Belgium.

Minister Flanagan said:

“Following the Belgian Government’s decision to downgrade the security level in Belgium to a level 3, my Department’s Travel Advice is now advising Irish citizens to ‘Exercise Caution’ in Belgium.

The Department’s new travel advice reads:

“The Belgian Government announced on Thursday 26 November that the security alert level has been reduced to level 3 in Brussels and Vilvoorde. This means that all Belgium is now at security level 3.
Irish citizens in Belgium or intending to travel to Belgium are nevertheless advised to be vigilant at all times.

There remains a heavy police and military presence in Brussels and 500 police officers have been made available to provide security at schools and on the metro system. Irish citizens are advised to follow the advice of the local authorities and respect security controls that are in place in the city. The website for Belgium's crisis centre is www.crisiscentrum.be. It gives the latest situation and developments in French, Dutch and German.

The utmost caution is advised at all times especially at airports and train stations.”

Minister Flanagan further stated:

“My Department and our Embassy in Brussels is continuing to monitor the situation and maintain close contact with the Belgian authorities.”
