Minister Paul Kehoe attends 3rd annual Defence Forces’ Veterans Day

The Minister with Responsibility for Defence, Mr Paul Kehoe, T.D., today attended the 3rd annual Defence Forces’ Veterans Day in McKee Barracks, Dublin.  This event was organised by the Defence Forces to acknowledge the contribution that former servicemen and women have provided to the State, both here at home and around the world.  In recognising this service, the Minister stated that

“In this year, as we commemorate the historic events of 1916, we are all acutely conscious of the role that the members of the Defence Forces, both serving and retired, have played in service to the State, both at home and overseas.”

“Ireland has had a long and proud tradition of participation in overseas peacekeeping missions mandated by the United Nations since 1958.  To date, this service has comprised approximately 65,400 individual tours of duty.”

The Minister went on to say “Your commitment, service and loyalty to the traditions of the Defence Forces on overseas service have contributed to the high regard in which Ireland is held within the international community.

“Everywhere they go members of the Defence Forces represent the best of what Ireland, although a small country, can contribute towards the cause of international peace and security.”

“I would like to pay tribute to you former members of the Defence Forces, for the important role that each of you have played in your career at home and overseas.  Your dedication and service has contributed in no small measure to the excellent reputation of the Defence Forces.”

Minister Kehoe concluded by remembering “the military personnel who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the cause of peace.  Many of you here today will remember lost friends and comrades, our soldiers, who did not come home.  We will not forget them.”
