Taoiseach meets Treasury Secretary

Taoiseach Enda Kenny today met with US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner in Washington as part of his visit to the United States for St Patrick's Day.

Mr Kenny had a " very good exchange on the global economic situation and the prospects for the world economy" with the Treasury Secretary. The Taoiseach outlined his new Government’s plans for economic reform, against the background of the EU-IMF Programme and the ongoing negotiations in the European Union, as they affect Ireland.

He also stressed his Government's determination to address conclusively the issues of reducing the budget deficit, reforming the banking system and implementing a clear policy programme.

The Treasury Secretary shared his perspective on current developments in the US and the prospects for the global economy.
