Video: St Patrick's Day reception at the White House

President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden hosted a St Patrick's Day reception at the White House last night. The reception was attended by Taoiseach Enda Kenny and his wife Fionnuala.

President Obama welcomed the Taoiseach and his wife, and spoke of the links between Ireland and America:

Every year at this time we’re reminded just how many strands of green are woven into our American story…In many ways, what it means to be Irish helped define what it means to be American…In the years ahead may our sons and daughters only grow closer

The Taoiseach assured President Obama that his decision to visit Ireland in May had been very well received at home:

Yes - there's no one as Irish as Barack Obama. And Sir, they're queuing in their thousands to tell you, in Moneygall when you visit us in May. Let me assure you Mr President that the news of your decision to come to Ireland has already caused quite a stir and you can count on a huge Cead Mile Failte from the Irish people....You will visit us, Mr President, in a short time. I hope when you do your stay will symbolise the life-giving bond between Ireland and America.

We are your gateway to Europe. And I can say right here, right now, that gateway is wide open and ready for business. And with our new government, our new mandate from the people, it's in good, safe hands.
