Minister McEntee meets with Swedish Minister of EU Affairs and Trade

This morning, Minister of State Helen McEntee met in Dublin with her Swedish counterpart, Minister Anne Linde, Minister for EU Affairs and Trade. They discussed a number of EU policy issues, with particular focus on the Future of Europe and the opportunities of the digital single market.

Speaking after their meeting, Minister McEntee welcomed the continued close co-operation between Ireland and Sweden, reflected in Minister Linde’s presence in Dublin and in a strong working relationship within the EU.
“Ireland and Sweden recognise the fundamental importance of the European Union in dealing with the breadth of issues affecting us”, she said, underlining that “we both want the EU to be focused on job creation, especially among young people. We want a digital single market that helps SMEs do businesses digitally and helps consumers use services on-line. Any barrier to business online is a barrier to progress, trade and jobs. We want ambitious trade agreements that respect the high standards our citizens expect; agreements that provide better opportunities for jobs and growth.”

Minister of State McEntee continued that:
“In Ireland, we have undertaken extensive analysis of the consequences of Brexit and our unequivocal conclusion is that our future interests are best served by remaining a fully committed member of the European Union, notwithstanding the UK’s departure. Like Sweden, we see it as the best instrument we have for addressing the new challenges we are facing, serving the needs of our citizens who want to live, study, work, move and prosper freely across the continent. It is important that our contribution to the Future of Europe debate reflects the concerns and expectations of the Irish people.”

Following their meeting both Ministers addressed the Institute for International European Affairs, as the first in a series of events as part of a broad and inclusive consultation process on the Future of Europe.
