Taoiseach to attend British-Irish Council Summit in Wales

Taoiseach Enda Kenny will attend the British Irish Council Summit being hosted by Wales in Cardiff Castle this morning.

The Taoiseach will be accompanied by the Minister for Children, Ms Frances Fitzgerald.

The BIC was established under the Good Friday Agreement to promote the special relationships between the eight Member Administrations in these islands. The Welsh Summit will be the nineteenth to be held since the inaugural meeting of the BIC in 1999 and the third to date this year.

The Taoiseach will provide an overview of developments at the recent European Council and refer to the Irish Presidency of the European Union which begins on 1st January2013.

He will also outline Ireland’s path to economic recovery, as well as focusing on the close links between the economies of these islands.

This will be followed by a discussion by member Administrations on developments in their respective economies and specifically on public investment in infrastructure, as a means to promote economic growth.

The main theme of the Summit is Early Years policy. Minister Fitzgerald will speak on this issue on behalf of the Government.

A Communiqué will issue from the BIC at the conclusion of the Summit.
