Taoiseach Enda Kenny has nominated Ms Hildegarde Naughton to fill the vacancy in the membership of Seanad Eireann caused by the resignation of Martin McAleese.

Ms Naughton, who is a primary teacher, has served as a member of Galway City Council since 2009, and was mayor of the city in 2011/2012.

Commenting on his decision, the Taoiseach said:

Throughout her political career to date, Hildegarde Naughton has been a very capable and committed representative of the people of Galway. She will be a very constructive and successful member of the Seanad and I wish her well in her new role.
