Minister Sherlock opens Online Gateway to Cultural Artefacts

Research & Innovation Minister Sherlock yesterday launched the Royal Irish Academy’s Discovery website.  This website, allowing users to explore a wealth of Irish cultural artefacts online, has been developed by RIA in partnership with several higher education and cultural institutes.  Minister Sherlock described the project as seeking ...

“to promote excellence in the sciences, humanities and social sciences.  The new website will give users access to over 6,000 digital artefacts from a range of world class collections held here on the island of Ireland. This project illustrates how we have combined innovation and technology to provide Ireland with a world class platform that provides outreach and education on our rich cultural heritage.”

This digital storehouse allows users to browse and search artwork, music and voice recordings, letters, maps, drawings and more, from collections currently housed in disparate collections across Ireland.  These include the Chester Beatty Library, Irish Traditional Music Archive, National University of Ireland, Galway, Queen’s University Belfast, Royal Irish Academy, St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, Trinity College Dublin, and University College Cork.
