Irish science and engineering students showcases their talent on the European Stage - Sherlock

Minister for Research and Innovation Sean Sherlock today congratulated Alexander Amani, the 16 year Castleknock Student who has a major award at the annual EU Young Scientist Competition, following his win at the BT Young Scientist and Technology awards earlier this year, and Cork Institute Technology student, Rian Edman who has been awarded the title of 2011 European Mechanical Engineering Student.

"There is no doubt that Alexander and Rian faced some tough competition and we are very proud of their achievements in winning these top computing/engineering awards. They are a great inspiration to their fellow students and their achievements should encourage more students to study science, engineering and maths subjects", said Minister Sherlock.

"These awards demonstrate yet again the high standards being achieved by our young people in the science and engineering field. I certainly take great encouragement from seeing a continuation of Ireland’s young scientists strong track record in this EU competition, winning 30 prizes since 1989 and in the European Science, Engineering and Technology Student of the Year, which is one of the most important and prestigious for science and technology undergraduates in Europe, " Minister Sherlock added.
