Minister Seán Sherlock congratulates winners of the John Hooper Medal for Statistics

Today, the Minister for Research and Innovation, Seán Sherlock, TD, in conjunction with the Central Statistics Office, presented prizes to the winners of the John Hooper Medal for Statistics.

The John Hooper Medal for Statistics is for post-primary students who design a poster, to describe an aspect of their environment, with the help of statistics.

Statistics is included as one of the strands in the Project Maths syllabuses for both Junior and Leaving Certificate which have now been rolled out to all schools.

Speaking at the awards event, Minister Sherlock said, “The work that students do in the John Hooper competition complements the work they are doing in the statistics strand of the Project Maths curriculum.

“Project Maths represents a hugely significant investment in maths education in Ireland; it is about increasing real student engagement in mathematics.

“This competition helps to bring textbooks to life and shows how able students are to engage in mathematical questions and mathematical thinking – just the kind of skills that Project Maths supports.”

The Minister encouraged students to get involved in the 2013 competition which he launched today.

He concluded by thanking all of this year’s organisers and participants.
