Minister Alan Kelly confirms allocation of €8million for the redevelopment of Inis Oírr pier and reaffirms the Government’s commitment to island communities

Mr. Alan Kelly, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government has today (27th January 2016) confirmed the allocation of €8million under the Capital Plan 2016 – 2021 for the redevelopment of Inis Oírr pier and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to our island communities.

The proposed redevelopment will consist of a 90 meter extension to the existing pier with an attached breakwater structure along with some rock dredging works. Some structural works to repair damage caused in the storms in 2014 will also be carried out. This will provide a safe harbour for all users and much needed shelter for berthing vessels. It will also alleviate congestion arising from the transportation of cargo and passengers to and from the Island.
Minister Kelly stated “this much needed redevelopment of the pier and harbour on Inis Oírr is of major importance to the island community and will improve safety and local transport access, as well as business and tourism links with the mainland.”

He added: “I am delighted that my Department has commenced engagement with Galway County Council with a view to advancing this very important project. It is important that all communities share in the economic recovery and I am confident that this project will significantly strengthen economic opportunities for our island communities.”

While Galway County Council will have primary responsibility for the timely and efficient delivery of this key capital project, the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government will work closely with the Council during the implementation of the project.
Both organisations will work together over the coming period in order to advance the project planning process and get this important project underway as soon as possible.
