Varadkar officially opens €61M Belturbet Bypass on N3

Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar has officially opened the N3 Belturbet Bypass which includes 6.7km of new road and a cable stay bridge across the River Erne.

The €61 million project finally takes traffic out of the town and will considerably reduce journey times along this stretch of the N3.

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to officially open the Belturbet Bypass here in Cavan.  The town had to cope with heavy traffic for years, but there was a dramatic improvement in traffic levels when the road opened to vehicles in December.

“One of our priorities for the national roads network is to separate local traffic from through traffic. I hope that this new bypass has made it a lot easier and a lot of more pleasant to cycle, walk and journey around Belturbet. Good transport infrastructure is also essential if you want to develop the local economy.

“At a time when Exchequer funding is so limited and our priority is to maintain roads and prioritise safety projects, it’s great to see a major project like this through to completion. I congratulate the NRA, Cavan County Council and the contractor for the successful delivery of this scheme.”
