Appointment of New Governor of the Mountjoy Prison Campus

The Minister for Justice and Equality, Ms Frances Fitzgerald TD, has announced the appointment of Brian Murphy as the new Mountjoy Prison Campus Governor. He will take up his position as Campus Governor on 1st September 2014 and will succeed Edward Whelan upon his retirement at the end of this month.

Mr Murphy’s appointment as Campus Governor follows an open recruitment competition which was conducted by the Public Appointments Service. Open recruitment in the Irish Prison Service was introduced under the Public Service Agreement 2010-2014 (Croke Park Agreement).

Brian Murphy has served in a wide range of roles in the Civil Service, and is currently the Director of Operations in the Irish Prison Service.

In making the announcement, Minister Fitzgerald said: "I wish to take this opportunity to offer my congratulations to Brian Murphy on his appointment as Campus Governor of the Mountjoy Prison Campus and to wish him well in his new post. He has a distinguished record of public service and the experience gained throughout his career, including as Director of Operations in the Irish Prison Service, will ensure that he has all the qualities needed for such a unique and challenging role”.

The Minister also paid tribute to retiring Governor Whelan saying “I would also like to pay tribute to Governor Whelan who is retiring after 42 years in the Service. He has served with distinction at the highest level of management within the Irish Prison Service and has a proven track record of delivery in all the prisons for which he was responsible. Recently, as Campus Governor of Mountjoy Prison, he has overseen the transformation of a prison that was once earmarked for closure but has now been revitalised and modernised ensuring a standard of accommodation for prisoners that complies with domestic and international best practice.

He leaves behind a proud record of dedicated service to the State in the finest tradition of the Irish Prison Service and, on my own behalf and on behalf of the Government, I thank him for his service”
