Minister Burton announces appointment of Eugene McErlean to Citizens Information Board

Minister for Social Protection, Ms Joan Burton TD, today

(Friday 9th September)

announced the appointment of Mr Eugene McErlean to the Citizens Information Board.

In welcoming the appointment Minister Burton said: "I am delighted to have the benefit of Mr McErlean’s banking and legal experience on the Citizens Information Board.’’

Mr McErlean, who is a solicitor by profession, has a range of legal experience having acted as a lawyer for the UK Government Legal Service, British Airways and the AIB Group. Mr McErlean also has extensive experience in the financial sector having served as Head of Group Internal Audit for Allied Irish Banks between 1997 and 2002. More recently, he assisted in preparing an international report on whistleblower legislation.

Accepting the appointment, Mr McErlean said: "I am delighted to have been appointed by Minister Burton and am looking forward to making a contribution to the important work of the Citizens Information Board."

The Citizens Information Board is the national agency responsible for supporting the provision of information, advice and advocacy on social services and for the provision of the Money Advice and Budgeting Service.

Mr McErlean’s appointment follows a rigorous selection process in which 172 applications were received on foot of a notice inviting expressions of interest in the post published on 5th August 2011.
