Taoiseach attends EU Summit

The Taoiseach, accompanied by the Minister of State for European Affairs, will attend the European Council this week. They will attend a ceremony in Ypres at Menin Gate to mark 100 years since the start of the First World War. Following the ceremony, EU leaders will participate in a working dinner in Ypres Town Hall, before the Summit meeting in Brussels.

The main focus of the European Council will be on agreeing a strategic agenda to guide the EU for the coming five year period. Leaders will also be asked to nominate a new European Commission President. Heads of State and Government will also take decisions on new strategic guidelines on justice and home affairs, the European Semester, Regulatory Reform (REFIT), Climate & Energy, particularly Energy Security and the situation in Ukraine (Ukrainian President Poroshenko will be present on Friday to brief EU leaders).

Association Agreements with Georgia and Moldova and the remainder of the Association Agreement with Ukraine will be signed in a ceremony on Friday morning.
