Taoiseach Micheál Martin to deliver a message of support to the UN Biodiversity Summit

The Taoiseach Micheál Martin will deliver a message of support today (30 September, 10pm IST) to the UN Biodiversity Summit, reiterating Ireland’s commitment to working with its partners to halt the loss of precious habitats and species, to reverse the degradation of ecosystems and support sustainable development.

The UN Biodiversity Summit highlights the biodiversity crisis facing humanity and raises awareness of the urgent need to accelerate action on biodiversity for sustainable development. It is an opportunity for Heads of State, Government and other leaders to raise ambition for the development of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, which is due to be adopted at the 15th meeting of the Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, to be held in 2021.

This framework, and its effective implementation, must put nature on a path to recovery by 2030 to meet the SDGs and realize the Vision of “Living in harmony with nature”.

Ireland became the second country in the world to declare a climate and biodiversity emergency in its parliament. The current Programme for Government commits the Government to setting up an effective and representative citizens’ assembly on biodiversity, reflecting the important role of society in shaping Ireland’s response to this crisis.

The Taoiseach has also joined the leaders of more than seventy nations in signing a ‘Leaders’ Pledge for Nature’, committing to undertake urgent action to halt biodiversity loss and put nature on a path to recovery by 2030.
