Taoiseach meets European Commission Negotiator Michel Barnier

European Commission Negotiator Michel Barnier

An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar and Minister for Europe Helen McEntee TD will meet European Commission Chief Negotiator on Brexit, Michel Barnier, today (Monday) in Government Buildings.

The meeting comes just days before the UK leaves the EU at the end of this week, on Friday January 31st.

The Taoiseach and Mr Barnier will discuss the next phase of Brexit negotiations, dealing with the future relationship between the EU and the UK, including trade.

They will discuss implementing the Irish Protocol as part of the Withdrawal Agreement, which sets out to prevent a hard border on the island of Ireland, guarantee citizens’ rights, and protect the Good Friday Agreement.

The Taoiseach will emphasise that the upcoming negotiations should ensure no trade quotas, no tariffs, minimum bureaucracy and a level playing field between Ireland, the EU and the UK.
