Taoiseach participates in European Council videoconference on Covid-19

The Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, participated in a videoconference meeting of EU Heads of State and Government this evening.

This is the third such meeting in the past two weeks, focussed on responding to the Covid-19 emergency

They agreed to continue to coordinate joint actions on containing the spread of the virus, on procurement of vital medical equipment, on facilitating critical supply chains, on funding research into vaccines and new medicines, and on getting EU citizens home.

Recognising the unprecedented nature of the current challenge, they welcomed the additional financial commitments of the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the European Investment Bank.

They also noted the progress made by the Eurogroup, and called on the Eurogroup to bring forward its proposals within two weeks.
