Appointment under Garda Whistleblower Regulation announced

Justice Minister Alan Shatter today announced the appointment of Mr Oliver J. Connolly as a Confidential Recipient under the Garda Síochána (Confidential Reporting of Corruption or Malpractice) Regulations 2007.

The Regulations provide for the Minister to appoint a Confidential

Recipient in addition to any internal Garda appointments as Confidential

Recipients which may be made by the Garda Commissioner from among the

members and civilian employees of An Garda Síochána.

The role of the confidential recipient is to be available to receive in

confidence reports of corruption or malpractice within An Garda Síochána

from Garda members or civilian employees.

Announcing the appointment the Minister said...

I am delighted to appoint Oliver J. Connolly to this important position. Any member or civilian employee of An Garda Síochána who wishes to report in confidence about

corruption and malpractice can be assured that any such report will be taken seriously and extensive protections will be given to him or her.

It is in everyone’s interests that An Garda Síochána operates to the highest possible standards and that those who are aware of corruption or malpractice within the organisation can report it knowing they will be protected.

This Government has placed a high importance on addressing the issue of Whistleblowing and further measures in this area will be brought forward in the months and years ahead. I wish Mr. Connolly every success in his new role.
