Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Catherine Martin T.D. has announced 5 selected artists-in-residence under the Decade of Centenaries 2012-2023 Programme. The Department scheme underpinning the selection is a partnership with the National Museum of Ireland (NMI), the National Library of Ireland (NLI), the National Archives, the Military Archives and Beyond 2022|Ireland’s Virtual Record Treasury project.
The 5 artists are: Anthony Haughey (NMI), Julie Morrissy (NLI), John Beattie (National Archives), Studio 9 (Military Archives) and Mairéad McClean (Beyond 2022).
These artists will reflect on the rich collections held by, and collaborate with, their host partner to create innovative pieces and imaginative work to support and grow the audience for these collections, held by our National Cultural Institutions and other bodies.
Announcing the 5 selected artists, Minister Martin said:
“As we embark on the final, most sensitive phase of the Decade of Centenaries 2012-2023, these artists can bring some of our rich primary source material into the public domain in engaging and imaginative ways. Artistic and creative endeavours under this partnership and others will have an important role in encouraging people of all traditions to explore, reflect on and debate challenging and difficult issues arising over the remaining three years of the programme”.
The focus of the artist-in-residence scheme under the programme for 2021 is on five Institutions that hold or present material with a direct connection to the period and to bring those historical collections to new audiences. The wider centenaries programme explores original ways to engage with this part of our history and support authentic historical enquiry about this period as well as promote the use of archival resources. It also aims to support artists and highlight the importance of artistic enquiry throughout the Decade of Centenaries.
Each of the five partners is engaging an artist selected from a specific discipline (depending on the bespoke requirements or emphasis of that body) to reflect on particular collections and themes falling under the scope of the Decade of Centenaries.
Minister Martin continued:
“I am greatly heartened and encouraged by the level, diversity and quality of engagement by all the artists who applied to the partners for a role under this new scheme. I look forward to the selected artists, with their hosts, developing unique and original work which will attract and engage new and existing audiences to our precious national collections. Importantly, the scheme also provides these 5 contemporary creative arts practitioners with an opportunity to develop their own creative practice in partnership with their hosts.”

The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media is providing total funding of €125,000 in 2021 to the partners in support of the Artist-in-Residence scheme as part of the Decade of Centenaries 2012-2023 Programme.
Each participating partner has selected their own artist-in-residence based on shared criteria and based on the themes of the Decade of Centenaries.
