New Irish Government to be formed today

A NEW Government of Ireland will be formed today with the commencement of the 31st Dáil – (the Irish parliament).

The 166 Dáil deputies, elected in the General Election of the 25th of February, will arrive in Leinster House in Dublin to begin their work.

The first session will get underway at noon and the first business is the election of a Ceann Comhairle - the “head of the council” or the speaker of the house.

Deputies will then move to elect a new Taoiseach to replace the outgoing Taoiseach Brian Cowen.

The new Taoiseach will then travel to

– the residence of the President of Ireland - to receive the seal of office.

Once the new Taoiseach has received the seal of office, the announcement of the members of the new Cabinet can follow in Leinster House.

The new Taoiseach, in announcing the names of the Cabinet, will have put in place the 29th Irish Government.
