Appointments to the High Court

At its meeting today, the Government nominated Mr John Jordan SC and Mr Alexander Owens SC for appointment by the President to the High Court.

The vacancies in the High Court arise following the appointment of The Hon Ms Justice Caroline Costello and The Hon Ms Justice Isobel Kennedy to the Court of Appeal on 13 November 2018.

The Government has taken the necessary steps to formally advise President Higgins of the nominations in accordance with constitutional procedure.

The nominations for appointment to the High Court follows the receipt of lists of suitable candidates from the Judicial Appointments Advisory Board.

Mr John Jordan, SC

  • · Educated: University College Dublin and King's Inn
  • · Called to the Bar: 1985
  • · Called to the Inner Bar: 2011
  • · Experience in many areas of law including criminal, property, contract, probate, personal injury, defamation, licensing, professional negligence and landlord and tenant law.

Mr Alexander Owens, SC

  • · Educated Trinity College Dublin and the King’s Inns 
  • · Called to the Bar in 1980 
  • · Called to the Inner Bar in 2000
  • · Experience, in particular, in criminal law, and in other areas of law including local government, chancery and conveyancing.
