Minister Murphy’s statement on April Homelessness Report

Mr. Eoghan Murphy T.D., Minister for Housing, Planning & Local Government, today (29 May, 2019) published his Department’s April Homelessness Report. The report, based on data provided by housing authorities, captures details of individuals accessing State-funded emergency accommodation arrangements that are overseen by housing authorities.

   National Figures

     April 2019

   Adults

     6,584

   Families

     1,729*

   Dependants

     3,794

*Adults associated with these families are included in the 6,584 figure

Commenting on the figures, Minister Murphy said -

The figures for April show an overall increase of 73 people in emergency accommodation compared to March. We saw a small reduction in the numbers of families accessing emergency accommodation, with 4 fewer families and 27 fewer dependants in emergency accommodation.

Family homelessness continues to be very challenging, particularly in the Dublin area. So far this year we have exited more than 320 families out of emergency accommodation into a home, which is some progress, but clearly, we need to do a lot more. My Department is working closely with the local authorities to deliver homes for every family in emergency accommodation.
