Funding is the final 2019 Network Funding awards under the What Works Network Support Fund
What Works is an initiative which aims to maximise the impact of prevention and early intervention to improve outcomes for children and young people
The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Dr Katherine Zappone TD today announced the final funding awards under the 2019 Network Support Fund, a What Works Initiative, supported through Dormant Accounts Funding.
This funding measure, which was launched in 2018, was designed to provide support to organisations promoting evidence informed approaches to prevention and early intervention services, so that those working with and for children, young people and their families are supported in doing the right things, in the right way and at the right time.
The fund was open for applications until 5 November 2019 and awards totalling €379,012 were made in 2019 to networks seeking to enhance their practice and share their learning and challenges in a more systematic and reflective manner.
The Minister said:
I am delighted to announce this allocation of funding to further support these organisations working with and for children and young people to further support them in accessing essential training, workshops, networking and sharing events. I am confident all those successful in their application will use the learning they’ll achieve towards making a positive difference to the lives of children and young people living in Ireland.
These grants will enable facilitation of formal and informal knowledge sharing explicitly focussed on enhancing practice and professional dialogue and curiosity around evidence informed prevention and early intervention.

Grant allocations were awarded on an annual basis, minimum of €1,000 and maximum of €20,000 per year per applicant. All grants must be expended by 31 December 2019.

What Works is an initiative designed by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs which aims to maximise the impact of prevention and early intervention to improve outcomes for children and young people living in Ireland.
What Works focuses on enhancing a number of key areas as they relate to the children’s and youth sectors:
- Information & Knowledge
- Capacity and
- Quality in prevention and early intervention policy, service and practice.
The initiative seeks to secure a return on the investment and impact in the area of prevention and early intervention in Ireland over the past decade. It will do this through resourcing the above areas so that those working with and for children, young people and their families are supported in doing the right things, in the right way and at the right time.
