Statement on outcome of ballot

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross T.D., today welcomed the results of the final ballot and the decision by all trade unions in Iarnród Éireann to accept the Labour Court's Recommendation.

Minister Ross stated: "I am pleased that all trade unions have voted to accept the Recommendation and that management and employees can now move on to build a successful and sustainable future for Iarnród Éireann. I am confident that working together to implement the Recommendation in full will benefit the Company, its employees and passengers. I would like to thank the Labour Court, Workplace Relations Commission, and of course employees, trade unions and management for their efforts in recent weeks to resolve this difficult dispute."

The Minister stated that this is a good day for passengers and tomorrow will also see the addition of a key piece of infrastructure with the opening of the Luas Cross City line. The Minister added that there are a wide range of issues which need to be considered if we are to ensure that public transport continues to serve the needs of society and the economy. The Minister confirmed again that he proposes to hold a broad stakeholder discussion on public transport policy, and he expects to make an announcement on this very shortly.
