‘Game-changing’ energy project a winner in latest round of EU research funds

The Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Denis Naughten T.D., has welcomed the latest results of Horizon 2020, the EU’s €75 billion programme for Research and Innovation, which show that Ireland has won €336.7 million in competitive funding from the programme up to the end of September.

Minister Naughten was pleased that RealValue, a ground-breaking €15.5m energy storage project, was a notable beneficiary of the latest funding decision.

Coordinated by Glen Dimplex, RealValue commenced in June 2015 and involves installing Smart Electric Thermal Storage Systems (SETS) in over 1000 properties across Ireland, Germany and Latvia. It is the first large-scale testing of this game-changing new model for renewable energy storage, and will be instrumental in developing business models to quantify the potential of small scale energy storage moving forward.

Crucial to the success of the RealValue project is the involvement of 13 partners from Ireland, the UK, Germany, Finland and Latvia. In Ireland the entire energy supply chain is represented comprising of EirGrid, SSE Airtricity, Intel Labs Europe, Electricity Research Centre based in UCD and Glen Dimplex.
