Achieving Quality in Ireland’s Human Services – A Synthesis Report a report by the National Economic and Social Council

The Government welcomes the publication of NESC’s report

Achieving Quality in Ireland’s Human Services – A Synthesis Report,

which is the culmination of a series of publications by NESC on quality and standards in Ireland’s human services.

This report usefully summarises the findings of NESC’s earlier publications on standards and quality in policing, in the school system, in residential care for older people, in end-of-life care in hospitals, in home care for older people, and in disability services, illustrating the development of the social regulation infrastructure in Ireland over the last decade and the diversity of approaches employed.

The report highlights the importance of both oversight and support roles for the provision of quality services, suggesting the need for a ‘centre supportive of continuous improvement’, whether that be a regulator and/or government department or agency. While such a centre would have a role in both supporting and challenging individual organisations which are providing human services, it would also have a role in bringing about wider systemic improvements in the provision of quality services.
