On October 29th 2016, the 22nd Communities in Bloom National & International Awards Ceremonies were held in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada honouring municipalities across Canada, the United States, England, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Croatia and Italy.
Letterkenny, Co Donegal received a 5 Bloom rating in the International Large Town category and won the International Community Involvement Award. Letterkenny also achieved runner up position to Brandon in Manitoba, Canada for the International Youth Award.
Speaking today, Michael Ring TD, Minister for Regional Economic Development said "I would like to congratulate Letterkenny on their achievements in the Communities in Bloom International Competition. It is heartening to see the work of the Tidy Towns Committee and the entire local community being acknowledged on an international stage. I wish everyone continued success in national and international competitions."
In July and August, trained volunteer judges travelled to participating communities to evaluate the overall contributions of municipal council and departments, industry, businesses and the private sector including volunteer efforts in regards to the following criteria: Tidiness, Environmental Action, Heritage Conservation, Urban Forestry, Landscape and Floral Displays.
Following their evaluation, volunteer judges Odette Sabourin-Dumais and Piet Boersma wrote: "Letterkenny Tidy Towns Committee is a leader in the community in regards to cleanliness, environmental awareness and heritage preservation. The Committee is made up of 15 active members and 60 resident associations, each taking responsibility for their own areas in grass cutting, planting, weed and litter control. The interlocking relationship between business people, local government, schools and residents, working all together, is part of the success in winning the title of “Ireland’s Tidiest Town 2015”. The dynamic group has a strong understanding of their own community and works hard to improve quality of life for all.
The tourism development of the Wild Atlantic Way draws more people to the northern area of Ireland. A strategy to develop specific attractions in Town Centre such as the Church Lane and Cathedral Quarter is an excellent idea to revitalize a sector that was in poor state. Congratulations to all participants in the project!
