Minister Ring pays tribute to Paul O’Connell on his retirement

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring TD, has today acknowledged Paul O’Connell’s enormous contribution to rugby following confirmation of his retirement.

Speaking today Minister Ring said: ‘Paul has always been totally committed to his sport and to everything he does. His contribution to rugby has been immense and he has always been a brilliant leader and captain. He has been one of the supporters’ favourites for many years and has certainly been one of Irish rugby’s greatest ever players. His legendary performances on the field will serve as an inspiration for up and coming young rugby players. He has been a wonderful ambassador for Irish sport.

Unfortunately, due to the injury sustained in the Rugby World Cup last Autumn, he won’t get the chance to contribute to Toulon. He will however leave a lasting and wonderful legacy in both Munster and Ireland.

I am sure this will have been a hard decision for Paul to make but the right decision for himself, his family and the club. I have no doubt that Paul will still be heavily involved in rugby. I want to wish him and his family well in the future in all that he does.’
