Statement by the Minister for Finance, Mr Michael Noonan, T.D., on the death of the former Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty

I learned with great sadness of the death of Jim Flaherty, who had just stood down as Canadian Minister for Finance after more than eight years in the post. Jim was a genuine and loyal friend of Ireland throughout his career. He was a gracious host during my visit to Toronto over the Saint Patrick’s Day period. We worked closely together in the IMF and World Bank, where Ireland and Canada share a constituency. I also had the pleasure of accompanying Jim on his visit to Galway in June 2012 where he was conferred with an honorary degree by NUIG in recognition of his outstanding and distinctive contribution to public administration and Government.

Jim Flaherty was a great public servant who served his country well and was an outstanding Canadian Minister for Finance. He was a leading figure in the World Bank, the IMF, the G7 and G20. In the IMF and World Bank, he strongly promoted Canada’s national interest but was always determined to ensure that Ireland’s position was defended. After a lifetime of achievement and dedicated service to both Canada, I know that he was looking forward to returning to the private sector and spending some well-earned time with his family.

I know the Irish community in Canada will also be deeply saddened at the loss of one of their greatest friends. Jim Flaherty was forever accessible to the Irish Government and the Irish community and constantly championed the promotion of Irish related projects in Canada.

I would like to extend my deepest condolences and those of the Irish Government to his wife Christine, and their three sons.

He will be sorely missed by his many friends in Ireland. May he rest in peace.
