Minister Ciarán Cannon, T.D., Celebrates 400th Anniversary of the Royal School Cavan

The Minister of State for Training and Skills, Ciarán Cannon, T.D., yesterday attended the 400th anniversary celebrations of the Royal School Cavan.

Minister Cannon acknowledged the work and dedication of the Board of Governors, Board of Management, staff, students and parents, who have all contributed to the Schools’ "well-deserved tradition of excellence in teaching and learning".

Established by royal charter to cater exclusively for Protestant students, for many years now, the School has been enrolling students from a wide diversity of backgrounds.

The Minister noted the success of the School in recent years: "This vibrant school has grown and developed down through the past four centuries and today it is a co-educational school, catering for over 200 day students and some forty-five boarders, a figure which has shown a commendably steady growth in recent years".

He continued by noting that throughout "its long and varied history the school has never stood still.

"It has constantly evolved and has continued to respond admirably to the ever-changing needs of its pupils and the community it serves".

Minister Cannon emphasised the importance of schools to their local communities, noting that "a great school is the focal point for the community it serves and this is certainly the case with the Royal School Cavan".

Ciarán Cannon concluded by extending his congratulations to all those involved in today’s event, and wishing current and future students success in their future lives.
