A NEW IMPETUS FOR AN EU DEFENCE DEBATE SEMINAR OF THE EUROPEAN COUNCIL ON DEFENCE 2013- Friday 17th May

In December 2013 the European Council will, for the first time in five years, include a thematic discussion on the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) and Defence issues.  The Council meeting will afford all EU Member States a significant and relatively unique opportunity to place EU defence issues centre stage and to consider the role of CSDP in the presence of Heads of State and Governments.

As part of Ireland’s Presidency programme and to assist in initial preparatory discussions in the lead up to the Council meeting, the Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, Mr. Alan Shatter, T.D., will host a seminar in Dublin Castle tomorrow (Friday 17th May).

This seminar will afford contributors and participants an opportunity to consider and debate issues in the CSDP and defence domain. These issues will include addressing ways of increasing the effectiveness and visibility of CSDP, enhancing the development of defence capabilities and strengthening Europe’s Defence industry.
