Minister with Responsibility for Defence, Paul Kehoe, T.D., welcomes the Minister for Defence of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Savvas Angelides to his offices

The Minister with Responsibility for Defence, Mr Paul Kehoe, T.D., today (Thursday 13th December 2018) welcomed the Minister for Defence of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Savvas Angelides, to his offices in Newbridge, Co. Kildare and to the Defence Forces Training Centre in the Curragh, Co. Kildare.
At their meeting in Newbridge, Minister Kehoe stated “Although Ireland and Cyprus are at opposite sides of Europe, as small Island states within the EU, there are many similarities and common interests that we share.” Both Ministers discussed a range of topics covering current developments in Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), Brexit, and other areas of bilateral interest.
Minister Angelides commended the service that Irish Defence Force personnel gave to the United Nations Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). The Defence Forces served in this mission for forty one years and twelve members of An Garda Síochána continue to serve there today.
