Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence announces substantial investment in Garda transport

The Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, Alan Shatter T.D. today announced a substantial additional investment in the Garda fleet, with funding of €3 million being made available for Garda transport funding with 170 new vehicles being purchased.

The Garda Commissioner will be responsible for the actual provision of the new vehicles and the Garda authorities are making arrangements to have them delivered and commissioned in December and January.

Commenting on the investment, Minister Shatter said "I am delighted to announce that arrangements are being put in place to provide significant funding, of €3 million, to the Garda authorities for the purchase of new vehicles. This is a substantial investment in Garda transport, particularly at a time of severe budgetary constraints. In this context, I am conscious of the need to support An Garda Síochána, to the greatest extent possible, in the vital work that they do and I am certain that the delivery and commissioning of 170 new vehicles will enhance the capacity of An Garda Síochána to provide an effective and efficient policing service to communities throughout the country."
