Statement from the Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence
The Minister has expressed his concern regarding the transfer to and the escape from Loughan House open centre of Martin McDermott. The Minister has sought a full report from the Director General of the Irish Prison Service. The Report will cover the full details as to how and why he was transferred from a closed prison to an open centre and the circumstances surrounding his absconding from Loughan House.
An Garda Síochána have informed the Department that this individual has now been arrested in Derry.
The Irish Prison Service and the Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence regret any upset or distress caused to the family and colleagues of Garda Gary McLoughlin.
