Casement Items go on display

Heritage Minister Jimmy Deenihan today visited Collins Barracks on the occasion of placing Roger Casement’s sword and hat on display at the National Museum.  These items of great historic import were taken from Casement on his capture, bringing in weapons for the Easter Rising, on Banna Strand, Co. Kerry in April 1916.  Since then the sword and hat have remained in the possession of the London Metropolitan Police.

It is fitting as the 95th anniversary of the Rising approaches that the possessions of a distinguished Irishman and inspiration of modern day Human Rights’ campaigning are now on public view.
