Dáil Éireann today agreed to the Government’s proposal that Mr. Seamus McCarthy would be nominated for appointment by the President as the Comptroller and Auditor General to replace Mr. John Buckley who retired at the end of February after a tenure of four years.

During the Dáil Motion, the Minister for Finance, Mr. Michael Noonan TD, said:

I wish Mr. McCarthy every success in his new role as Comptroller and Auditor General. Mr. McCarthy will take up his appointment during a period in which increasing attention is being paid to public sector reform and the value for money obtained from public funds.  Value for money, in all sectors of the economy, is key to ensuring economic growth in the future.  The Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General has a key role to play in this respect.

Mr. McCarthy’s nomination followed an open public recruitment process conducted by Public Appointments Service.

In accordance with the established practice used for this important Constitutional office, the Government’s decision to nominate Mr. Carthy reflected a consultation process by the Minister for Finance leaders of the opposition including the Technical Group of Deputies.

Mr. McCarthy will be formally appointed by President Michael D. Higgins in an official ceremony at a later date.
