Minister Donohoe takes part in IMF Debate on Global Economy as part of 2021 IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings

Today (Thursday), the Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe TD, will take part in a high-level panel discussing the global economic outlook. The Debate on the Global Economy is the signature IMF event at the IMF-World Bank Spring and Annual Meetings. The debate will focus on the impact of COVID-19 on the global economy and the discussion will touch on topics including policy challenges, the risk of a divergent recovery, the efforts of the international community to support more vulnerable countries, and the possible legacy issues of the COVID-19 crisis.

The Minister will participate in the debate in his capacity as President of Eurogroup and will reflect on the European Union’s response to the crisis and the outlook for recovery. He will be joined on the panel by Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the World Trade Organization; Mr Jerome Powell, Chairman of the US Federal Reserve; and Ms Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of IMF. The Debate on the Global Economy will be moderated by Ms Sara Eisen of CNBC.

In advance of the event, the Minister said: ‘I look forward to exchanging views with this panel of speakers and sharing my insight as President of Eurogroup on the policy challenges created by COVID-19 and the global response to date.  I am particularly keen to highlight the extraordinary economic policy response of the European Union at both Member State level and collectively, which have done so much to protect jobs, businesses and our citizens in their time of greatest need’.

The debate will be broadcast live on the links below.
