Tánaiste and Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald launching the Policing Authority's Code of Ethics for An Garda Síochána this morning

Tánaiste and Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald this morning launched the Policing Authority's Code of Ethics for An Garda Síochána.

The Code sets out nine standards of conduct and commitments for everyone in the Garda Síochána at every rank and grade including civilians, reserve Gardaí and sworn members.

The Code has a statutory basis in the Garda Síochána Act 2005 and its implementation will be overseen by the Policing Authority.

Speaking at the launch, the Tánaiste said:

"Being honest and ethical has always been a core value of An Garda Síochána, if perhaps not articulated quite so clearly in a document like the one we are launching here today.

"Gardai across the country work tirelessly, and to a very high standard, protecting the public and keeping the community safe. They have to make judgments and complex choices in diverse, often highly pressurised situations. This Code of Ethics, and the training it will give rise to, will help in guiding those decisions."
