Taoiseach congratulates Katie Taylor on World Championship victory

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has congratulated Katie Taylor on achieving gold in the Women’s AIBA World Championship in China.

The Taoiseach said:

Congratulations to Katie Taylor. This was another brilliant performance. She is an outstanding and true champion. She has made us all proud and lifted the heads of the Irish people.

Sports Minister Michael Ring echoed the Taoiseach’s congratulations saying:

Katie’s quest for a fourth world title has been supremely successful. Not only has she achieved a Gold Medal, she has now proved herself the best in the world four times over. Even more impressively, she has achieved her personal dream, and will go on to represent Ireland in the London Olympics 2012.

Minister Ring concluded:

Katie has shown how dedication, tenacity, commitment and determination can achieve world titles and gold medals. She is a great role model for her sport, and I hope her fantastic achievement will encourage other women to take up her sport. She is a superb ambassador for Women’s Boxing in Ireland and I congratulate her on her Gold Medal. We are tremendously proud that she will be flying the flag for Women's Boxing in Ireland in the London Olympics 2012.

Children and Youth Affairs Minister Frances Fitzgerald said:

I want to congratulate Katie Taylor on winning her fourth world title in a row and on also winning the best boxer award at the tournament; she is such an inspiration to other young women and a great ambassador for Irish sport. I wish her continued success at the Olympics in London.
