Taoiseach Enda Kenny with members of the Defence Forces at the European Movement Ireland ceremony for the 2016 European of the Year Award in the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin

Taoiseach Enda Kenny today presented Óglaigh na hÉireann, the Defence Forces with the 2016 European of the Year Award.

Vice Admiral Mark Mellett accepted the award on behalf of all of the Defence Forces at a ceremony in Dublin.

The European Movement Ireland award is in recognition of outstanding contributions in promoting Ireland's place in Europe and was awarded to the Defence Forces this year for their contribution to international peacekeeping and humanitarian work.

The Defence Forces currently have around 660 personnel serving across 11 missions overseas and have saved 15,600 lives to date as part of the humanitarian mission in the Mediterranean.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Taoiseach said:

“Since the foundation of the State, the Defence Forces have been a lynchpin of our democracy and a manifestation of our values. The work of the men and women of Óglaigh na hÉireann has brought great honour to Ireland and has enhanced Ireland’s reputation and influence in international affairs.”

“This past year has seen exemplary service displayed to Ireland and globally, often in very difficult circumstances. There have been many journeys but, to provide just one illustration, this year alone, over 7,000 lives have been saved in the Mediterranean by the Naval Service. This is a sobering thought but also testament to their achievements. It is no less than what we have come to expect, but no less remarkable for that.”
