The Handover of Dublin Castle State Ceremony

On 16th January 1922, eight members of the Provisional Government, led by Michael Collins, arrived in Dublin Castle to receive its handover from the last Viceroy of Ireland, Lord FitzAlan-Howard.

To mark the 100th anniversary of this significant event a State Commemoration will take place outdoors on Sunday, 16th January 2022, in Dublin Castle, in the presence of the President, Taoiseach, members of the Government and Council of State.  Attendance will also include representatives of the Dáil and Seanad Éireann, Diplomatic Corps, Judiciary, Local Government, Northern Ireland representatives and descendants of key figures of the time.

In order to comply with Covid-19 public health guidance it is not possible to open the event to members of the public but the ceremony will be broadcast live on RTE 1 at 1.35pm.

 

 

The Handover of Dublin Castle: A Centenary Conference

14-15 January 2022

 

This Conference, hosted by Trinity College will take place in the Printworks, Dublin Castle and over the two days contributors will explore the immediate reactions, the expected consequences, and the implications of this dramatic shift in the centre of power.  The programme includes an address by the Taoiseach and can be live-streamed at https://histories-humanities.tcd.ie/research/handover/. 

 

 

An Post Commemorative Stamp

To mark the event An Post have produced a commemorative stamp which will be launched in Dublin Castle by the Taoiseach on Saturday 15th January.
