Weekly Round Up: November 9th – 13th

Every Friday, we bring you the top five Government news stories of the week. Catch up on what you might have missed here. Click on the headlines to read the full story. 

This week, 1,380 jobs were announced in five companies in Dublin and Cork, including 1,000 new jobs in Apple in Cork, and 300 new jobs in Indeed in Dublin. The Government also announced, Enterprise 2025, its 10 year jobs and enterprise strategy.

10-year jobs and enterprise strategy launched

Enterprise 2025, a 10-year jobs and enterprise strategy, was launched today at Dogpatch labs in the CHQ building in Dublin. 

The strategy targets 2.18million people at work by 2020, the highest in the history of the State, which will entail an increase of 221,300 people at work based on most recent figures.

Government launches the ‘Be Winter-Ready’ Information Campaign

On Thursday Defence Minister Simon Coveney , Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe and the Minister of State at the Department Environment Ann Phelan launched the Government’s ‘Be Winter-Ready’ 2015-2016 Information Campaign.

Through a dedicated website www.winterready.ie, advice is being made available from a number of sources including Government Departments and Agencies, An Garda Síochána, the Health Service Executive, the Office of Public Works, Local Authorities and the transport providers. The advice has been categorised under various headings including: the Home, Road Safety, Schools, the Farming Community and the Business Sector.

Apple to Create 1000 Jobs in Cork

Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Jobs Minister Richard Bruton today welcomed the significant announcement that Apple will be expanding its campus in Hollyhill, Co.Cork and adding a new building that will provide new office space and room for 1,000 additional employees by mid-2017.  

It is estimated that Apple supports nearly 18,000 jobs across the country, including over 5,000 direct Apple employees - an increase of 25% in the past year alone . The company has had a presence in Ireland since 1980, when it opened its first facility in Cork.

Also on Wednesday, Indeed, the world’s leading job site, announced expansion plans for its Dublin-based headquarters adding 300 new employees in the next two years. The company has already started recruiting for sales, client services, business development, marketing, finance and operations roles, which will help companies across EMEA to maximise the return on their recruitment spend, while continuing to offer the best job search experience for job seekers.  

Tánaiste and Minister Fitzgerald announce Commencement of Marriage Act 2015  

On Tuesday Tánaiste Joan Burton and Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald signed the commencement order for the Marriage Act 2015. The Commencement Order will bring the provisions of the Marriage Act 2015 into effect from Monday 16 November 2015.  

The commencement order gives effect to the will of the people, as expressed in the referendum on 22 May, that marriage should be available to same-sex couples.

Kelly and Noonan announce new deal for tenants

On Tuesday, Environment Minister Alan Kelly announced a series of major reforms to the private rental sector in Ireland to provide rent certainty for both tenants and landlords.

A New Deal for Tenants which provides for rent certainty measures will include increasing the rent review period from one to two years, increased notice periods for rent reviews and much greater protections for tenants. The increase in rent review periods will mean that anybody who has faced a rent increase in 2015, will now not have a rent review until 2017. Legislation will require 24 months between all rent reviews, in what is among the most significant overhaul of tenants’ rights in the state.

On Monday, Taoiseach Enda Kenny met with Prime Minister David Cameron at Downing Street.

The two leaders discussed developments in Northern Ireland, the UK/EU negotiations and economic issues of interest to both Governments.
