#HaveYourSay on the work of a new Government Department

The Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science has today launched a consultation on the work of the new Department.

The Department is drafting its Statement of Strategy 2021– 2023, which will set out how the Department does its work over the next three years, and what its guiding principles are.

Speaking today, Minister Harris said: “The establishment of this new Department offers an exciting opportunity to bridge the gap between education and the economy, to help future proof our economy and our people to face the challenges posed by COVID-19, Brexit and digitalisation. This Department can be a driver of social inclusion and equality.

“But we cannot do it without you. We need you to help us mould and shape the new Department. I would strongly encourage anyone with an interest in social inclusion, in education, in science, in innovation to have your say and help us ensure this is a Department that delivers for you.

“We want your views so please have your say.”

Secretary General at the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Jim Breslin said “The new Department is responsible for policy, funding and governance of the further and higher education and research sectors, and for the oversight of the work of the State agencies and institutions operating in those areas.

“It is our role is to make sure that these sectors underpin and stimulate Ireland’s social and economic development.  We are also deeply aware that public investment and policies must provide opportunities that are available to everyone, including the most vulnerable people in society, and we want to hear from our stakeholders and wider society about how we can best make this a reality.”

Minister Collins added: “This Department is needed now more than ever. In the aftermath of COVID-19, this Department can ensure we have the right skills for the future and to ensure the economy can recover from economic turbulence.

“Please use this time to have your say and submit your views on what we should focus on for our three-year action plan.”
