Another Olympic medal for Ireland as Conlon achieves bronze
The youngest member of Team Ireland, Michael Conlon, has added to Ireland’s historic Olympic medal tally. Although narrowly missing out on upgrading his medal to silver, the Belfast man achieved bronze after a fiercely fought match against Cuba’s Robeisy Rameirz Carrazana at the ExCel arena in London this evening.
Speaking after the match Minister Leo Varadkar said: “For Michael Conlon to be awarded a bronze Olympic medal at the tender age of 20 is a remarkable accomplishment in itself. He is one of the best talents in Irish boxing and over the course of his matches we have seen him move sublimely and counterpunch brilliantly to secure the bronze. This is undoubtedly the start of a dazzling boxing career that will see Michael Conlon achieve great success in world championships and Olympics in the future and I warmly congratulate his achievement."
Minister Ring added: “We witnessed a cracking match this evening and Michael is a worthy Olympic medallist. He has made his club, St John Bosco, his family, community and country as a whole extremely proud. Seeing talent like this, assures us that Irish boxing has a bright future and Michael is a deserving medallist. We look forward to seeing him on the international stage again soon.”
