At its meeting today, the Government nominated Mr Denis McDonald, SC, for appointment by the President to the High Court and nominated Ms Geraldine Carthy, Solicitor, and Ms Mary Cashin, Solicitor, for appointment by the President to the District Court.

The vacancy in the High Court arises from the elevation of Mr Justice Paul Gilligan to the Court of Appeal on 19 December 2017. The vacancies in the District Court arise from the elevation of Her Hon Judge Kathryn Hutton to the Circuit Court on 11 January 2018 and the retirement of Judge Miriam Malone on 3 March 2018.

The Government has taken the necessary steps to formally advise President Higgins of the nominations in accordance with constitutional procedure.
