Carrigafoyle resounds to sounding harps

Jimmy Deenihan T.D., Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, will, this evening, speak at a performance of music, song and words at Carrigafoyle Castle as part of The Gathering.

Harper Aibhlín McCrann and poet and director of An Lab Theatre and Arts Centre in Dingle, Áine Moynihan will be joined by harpers Kathleen Loughnane and Deirdre Granville as well as sean-nós singer Seosamhín Ní Bheaglaoich in performing at Carrigafoyle Castle. The evening will also be a celebration of the life and works of Brendan Kennelly.

Carrigfoyle Castle, the former stronghold of the Kerry O’Connors, hosted travelling poets and harpers throughout its history. This year the Castle will be attended by visitors from all over the world who have returned home from Ballylonford Gathering Festival.

Speaking ahead of the event Minister Deenihan said “North Kerry has a long tradition of harp music which has been reignited by the present generation of Kerry Harpers. This wonderful performance of harp playing is a beautiful and unique way to celebrate The Gathering for those who have left Ballylongford and the surrounding areas for all across the world; it will give them a sense of pride in the place they call home and forever connect them and their families to their roots.”

This is a non-ticketed event and admission will be free.
