COVENEY EXPRESSES CONCERN AT FINDING OF DEAD GREYHOUNDS IN COUNTY LIMERICK

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD, today said “I am greatly concerned about the finding of dead greyhounds in County Limerick recently and I have asked Bord na gCon to keep me informed of any developments on this serious issue”.

The Minister pointed out that under the Welfare of Greyhounds Act which came into force in January 2012, welfare officers appointed by Bord na gCon are empowered to ensure that proper welfare standards are in place in all areas of the greyhound industry. An Animal Health and Welfare Bill will be formally published shortly which will further strengthen laws on animal welfare.

The Minister added “I have been informed by Bord na gCon that every effort is being made to establish the ownership of these greyhounds and that the Gardai are investigating the matter”.
