Cybersecurity offers opportunities for Ireland

Minister of State Creighton will represent the Government at the London Cyber Conference on 1-2 November. The event has been organized by the British Foreign Secretary William Hague, in order to examine the foreign policy, economic and social issues linked to cyberspace.

Speaking in advance of the conference, Minister Creighton said: "Cyberspace offers tremendous opportunities for Europe’s economies and for our citizens. A wealth of expertise exists within Ireland, whether it is in relation to cybersecurity, cloud computing or the semantic web.

Of course, we can’t ignore cyber-risks. It is important that countries work together to establish rules for the behavior of states in cyberspace. Cyberspace should be inclusive and safe for all users. Human rights, notably freedom of expression and of access, must be respected.

Cyberspace will be an important issue during Ireland’s Chairmanship of the OSCE next year and our Presidency of the EU in 2013. We will use these two roles to promote better international understanding of the challenges and opportunities which cyberspace presents"
